The Slaughter Pen is the second book in a series of three books about the horrific marine battle for Tarawa in World War II. Annihilation Beach...the first book in the series...deals with the first day of battle and explains why the battle took place in the first place. The Slaughter Pen is the follow up to Annihilation Beach and it deals with the fighting that took place on Day 2...or D+1...of the battle. This is a fictional account of the battle and the story follows a platoon of marines from the 2nd Regiment who must fight their way ashore and then experience all the horrors that were associated with the battle on the island itself. The story attempts to portray the fighting that took place for the island as accurately as possible in order to give the reader a realistic view of the battle. Japanese characters are also used to explain the battle from the Japanese viewpoint as well. The reader of these two books will have a better understanding of how and why the island war in the Pacific Theater was waged by the U.S. Marine Corps in World War II. Book 3...which will complete the series...is currently being written.
The Slaughter Pen A Story about the Horrific Marine Battle for Tarawa Day Two edition by James Dwyer Literature Fiction eBooks
A very riveting story in which Jim Dwyer does a superb job of developing and blending his fictional characters into the all too real, intense, and violent battle for Tarawa. He has created a very likeable and very believable cast of Marines that complement the historically accurate figures of the 2nd Marine Division who were given the mission to wrest this atoll from an extremely stubborn Japanese defense. He is not shy in bringing out the horrors of war, and he illustrates time and again the seeming arbitrariness of this awesome violence which will keep one from getting too close to these characters - for the heroes may not always survive.Product details

The Slaughter Pen A Story about the Horrific Marine Battle for Tarawa Day Two edition by James Dwyer Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Incredible how the author can grab my shirt collar and drag me onto the beach and pull me into a story as if I was right in the midst of this platoon's events. Every time I turned a page I grew deeper into their emotions and experiences. Wow.
Dwyer has done a great job of weaving this tale (part two of three) with actual persons who fought and led at the battle with fictional characters. The story picks up on D2 of the three day battle, and follows the different units who fight to take the island of Betio in the Battle of Tarawa. While I rated this as having "some violence", the reader should not be surprised at fairly graphic depictions of the violence of the battle and its victims.
This is a good read.
